Chapter 8

S oon after arriving at Angelica’s, Imani left, saying she was going to pretend to be a concerned friend and ask questions of the people living in the houses around where Jasmine disappeared. Sarah and Lavender stayed with me for the afternoon, tossing around ideas about what to do next. After they left, I snuggled on the couch with the fur babies and read. Even though we’d discovered something, it wasn’t enough to take us much further with the investigation, and with Will’s job on the line and Operation Food Poisoning, focussing was a problem. By the time Will got home at five—being desk-bound had some perks—I was exhausted.

As soon as I heard the reception-room door opening, I jumped up and ran, displacing two unhappy lap occupants. I got to the hallway as Will was shutting and locking the door. When he turned to face me, I gave him a huge hug. “How was today? Was it drama free?”

With one arm wrapped around my back, he stroked my hair with the other hand. “Depends how you define drama. I had a boring day, but your brother went home vomiting. He’d given Beren the heads-up, so he made himself scarce, not to mention the healing would have taken the rest of the day and maybe the next to recover from anyway. Chad’s secretary also went home ill. As soon as she did, Chad was calling around for an assistant. We made sure he got Liv.”

“Oh my God, that couldn’t have gone more perfectly! And to think we were so worried about getting her in there.”

“It was about time something went our way, don’t you think?”

I smiled. “Definitely. Come on, and I’ll tell you about my day.” We went into the living room and sat on one of the Chesterfields where Will greeted both animals. I supposed they figured I was coming back, clever furry people. Abby jumped onto his lap, and after getting a good pat, Ted sat at my feet. Such a homely, cosy scene. Who would’ve thought? If James had never gone missing all that time ago, I would likely still be living by myself in my Cronulla apartment, happy enough, but not nearly as happy as this. But, also, probably not nearly as stressed. Sometimes adversity led to something better. Who knew? Okay, so a lot of people knew, but it bared remembering, especially when things got difficult.

I relayed everything we’d done and what Imani had gone to do later. He nodded slowly. “Okay, that’s a start. And you could only get a look at his mouth?”

“Yep. I suppose it’s better than nothing.”

“True.” He stared at Abby for a moment, likely thinking, or was he talking to her? Gah, damn my lack of animal-communication skills. He finally looked up. “If only we knew where that doorway led. I think we need to go back to the church, see if you can get a picture of him taking her through his doorway too. It would at least establish a pattern.
